Five Concepts of Music Performance
These are the five concepts of music performance that we will be focusing on throughout the school year. We will be addressing the concepts through multiple experiences in music. Playing an instrument requires several skill sets that will also be addressed daily.
Tone (Tone Quality)
Beauty How beautiful is the sound coming out of your instrument?
Control Are you controlling your sound?
Balance Are you blending and balancing with those you are playing with?
Intonation
Melodic Line Are you playing the melody in tune with others who have the melody?
Chords Are you playing your note in the chord in tune?
Individuals Are you playing your notes in tune with the tonic?
Sections Are you playing in tune with your section?
Rhythm
Accents Are you playing all accents correctly and matched with others?
Meter Do you understand the time signature and can you play the music within that time signature with the correct feel?
Precision Are you matching all notes and rhythms with the rest of the ensemble?
Interpretation of Rhythmic Figures Are you performing the music with the correct style?
Technique
Fluency Is the music being performed accurately?
Articulation/Bowing Are you using the right technique to get the desired articulation?
Ensemble Is the entire ensemble using proper techniques?
Accuracy Are all the notes and rhythms correct?
Interpretation
Phrasing Are you creating a proper musical phrase?
Expression Do you understand how to express the feeling of the music and what that feeling is?
Tempo Are you playing in the tempo of the ensemble and is that tempo correct and steady?
Dynamics Are you playing the dynamics accurately?
Style Is the musical style you are playing with accurate for the piece of music?
Tradition Do you understand what the tradition or historical significance is behind the music you are performing and can you accurately portray that in a performance?
